Malouda expects Torres lift
Frenchman feels misfiring striker will be buoyed by display

Florent Malouda believes Fernando Torres will have received a confidence boost after creating both goals in Chelsea's 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night.

Torres failed to find the back of the net after starting the UEFA Champions League curtain-raiser but played provider for both David Luiz's 67th-minute opener and Juan Mata's strike deep into stoppage time.

The misfiring £50million striker has scored just one goal for Chelsea since joining from Liverpool in January and has drawn a blank so far this season.

But Malouda is adamant the Spaniard just needs more time and believes his display on Tuesday was a step in the right direction.
Confidence

"He works very hard for the team and tonight he gave two assists," Malouda told Sky Sports News.

"It's good for his confidence. The more confident he is the better he will be for the team.

"It's difficult when you see that people focus on one person in the squad. We work hard every day in training and I think Fernando is working very, very well. However people need to be patient."

Malouda believes the result marked the perfect start to the Blues' Group E campaign, adding: "We had tough opposition. Leverkusen played very well.

"In the first half we had possession so we had to be patient but until we scored the first we weren't sure of the win. So we had to push in the second half and that's what we did perfectly.

"We knew we had the possibilities to score and that's what we did. That was a perfect start - first home game, first win - so we have to carry on."

Captain John Terry was rested for the clash by manager Andre Villas-Boas, while Frank Lampard made a late appearance from the bench.

Malouda believes the boss was justified in resting two of his most experienced players due to the demanding calendar and the talent at his disposal.
Quality

"We know this year, with the quality we have in the squad, there will be a big turnover," he added.

"Every player plays international games so we have a lot of games this season. If we want to achieve our goals we know we have to be fresh.

"There's competition for the places but the most important thing is the team. I think with our team spirit we can go very far."
