Romelu Lukaku: I am very proud to join Chelsea but I am not here to replace Didier Drogba
The Belgian International has refuted claims that he is going to replace the former Marseille man but is proud to join the club and aims to impress Andre Villas-Boas
New Chelsea signing Romelu Lukuku has denied claims he has arrived at Stamford Bridge to replace Ivorian striker Didier Drogba.
The Belgian international completed his move from Anderlecht last week, believed to be in the region of £22 million, and will wear the No.18 shirt for the Blues this season.
The 18-year-old scored 16 goals in 37 games for Anderlecht last season and has made 10 apperances for his national side, scoring twice.
This record attracted the attention of Chelsea but Lukaku insists, despite the similarities in their game, he won’t be replacing Drogba and instead wants to learn from and play alongside him.
Lukaku said: “I’m not here to replace him, I’m just here to play for Chelsea but I hope he’s going to stay here for as long as possible so I can play with him and continue learning from him.
“He’s a world class striker. Every moment that I’ve spent with him I listen all the time because he always gives me advice. Every time in training I spend time with him – we talk. I sit next to him also in the dressing room.
"It will be the same also with Nico [Anelka] and Fernando [Torres], so I’m very happy to have world class strikers around me.
"Me and Didier are very, very similar. I also have pace and in one-against-one I’m also very strong but to be compared with him is a very big honour to me."
Lukaku faces tough competition to get into the side with Torres, Anelka, Drogba, Salomon Kalou and Daniel Sturridge all fighting for places.
But Lukaku is confident he will be able to impress Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas with the effort he puts into training.
The starlet said: “I just want to show to the coach whenever he needs me, I’m ready but first of all I want to train and to be as fit as far as possible.
“You train at a very high level and you make much more effort than in Belgium so I’m well aware of that.”
Lukaku realises there is still a long way to go in his career but he is proud that his future is with Chelsea.
Lukaku said: “I’m very proud to be here. I worked a long time to come at this level and now to be here makes me very proud.
“At my young age, the road is still very long but after one week I’m really focused to be better.
“To train with those guys is very important and to listen also to the experience they had in the past is also very important for me so I’m very happy about that.
“The Premier League is the biggest competition in the world so it will not be as easy as in Belgium, so first of all at my young age I want to learn from the players that are here.”
