Mata set to join Chelsea after Torres bombarded star with text messages
JUAN MATA is joining Chelsea – after Fernando Torres bombarded him with text messages.
The finer points of the £27million transfer are now being tied up, with the Valencia winger hoping to be unveiled on Tuesday following a medical.
And a five-year deal is on the table for Mata as Blues owner Roman Abramovich shows his confidence in boss Andre Villas-Boas by delivering his top target. Mata has been pursued by Arsenal as well this summer, but once again the Gunners have not moved quickly enough to seal a deal as Arsene Wenger stuttered over meeting his £22m release clause.
Chelsea’s case was given a huge help by record signing Torres being in regular contact with his Spain team-mate.
He was desperate for the Mata deal to go through, so has been calling and sending SMS messages to his pal.
Mata, 23, will add a new dimension to the Blues’ attack and the Villas-Boas plan is that his creativity from either wing can help £50m forward Torres flourish.
His arrival also underlines the fact Chelsea are building their next generation side, with starlets Romelu Lukaku and Oriol Romeu meeting the Press on Tuesday. Hotline understands Chelsea will pay £15m of the Mata cash up front, with the rest at the end of 2011.
And the spending in West London might not be over yet.
While Chelsea continue to pursue Luka Modric, they also have their eye on Montenegro winger Stevan Jovetic, 21.
He currently plays for Fiorentina and Villas-Boas has asked Abramovich if he would be willing to fund a £9m deal.
Chelsea defender Alex remains unsure over his future after being linked with Juventus.
Originally the Italians wanted to loan the Brazilian defender – but Chelsea will only let him leave if an £8m offer is made.
Alex said: “I am 29, and this is the right moment for me to sign a final major contract.
“If Juventus were to offer me a four-year deal I would gladly accept it. I would love to play in Italy and hope to fulfil this dream.
“They asked about a loan for me, but that would interest neither myself nor Chelsea.”
