早前皇馬巨星加里夫·巴爾接受<每日電訊報>的專訪，被問及英超及西甲聯賽的睇法，他認為西甲是最佳聯賽，英超則是最具競爭性的，就算是榜尾球隊都有可能擊敗榜首隊。兩大聯賽風格不同，英超的風格是快速，身體對抗性較激烈，而西甲就比較技術化，更強調控球在腳。
於2013年9月1日，巴爾以7,800萬鎊由熱刺轉投皇家馬德里。可惜，加盟後踢不出在熱刺的水準，又屢次傳出與球隊大佬C朗不和，更經常受到皇馬球迷的噓聲。不過，巴爾依然享受在皇馬的生活，因為他覺得在逆境中比順境中學到的東西更多，這一切使他成長為一個更成熟的球員。
最初加盟皇馬時，巴爾被安排踢右路，但在今季他向領隊賓尼迪斯自薦擔任攻擊中場。雖然球迷覺得他表現極其平庸，沒有攻擊中場具備的視野、創造力及組織能力，但巴爾自覺表現比上季更好，認為現在的體系更適合其風格，這是最佳位置，在中路可以找到空間，拿球時也可以進攻。更表示擅長在空檔裡拿球然後從中路進攻，而不是在邊路。

Maybe I’m not a typical No10 who’s more of a playmaker; I’m a player that gets the ball in space and attacks through the middle, rather than down the sides"巴爾更認為英超列強在歐洲賽事成績不佳是因為內耗太大。又指出過去西甲球隊都是歐冠決賽的常客，但英超上賽季沒有球隊晉級歐聯八強。並認為是因為英超太難踢了，每一支球隊都拼到最後，而38輪的比賽消耗了英超球隊很多精力。如果在西甲對弱隊，半場4-0領先下，下半場就不需要太拼，賽季末體能肯定比英超球隊更充沛。
